The readings this week continue the
subject matter of last week - wealth and
its consequences. Both Amos and Luke tell
us of rich people and how they enjoy lives
of luxury, of eating and drinking the
best. However they are out of touch with
the existence of people on the fringes of
society whose lives are bounded by
poverty. There is a cruel irony in
Lukes gospel. The poor man has a
name; the rich person is a man with no
name. He has no identity except his
wealth. Sometimes he is called
Dives which is a Latin word
for a rich man.
The
rich man did nothing harmful, nothing
wrong, nothing against the law, he was not
cruel to Lazarus, and he did not beat him.
The rich mans sin was his
insensitivity, his blindness to the plight
of another person. He was unaware of the
condition of Lazarus.
Lazarus
was a non-person.
Luke
gives us a vivid scene of Lazarus at the
door of the rich man. He was probably
dirty and smelly and frightening to look
at; not somebody we would greet
spontaneously. Moreover there was no
person willing to wash and clean his
sores. Did the licking of the dogs bring
him some relief?
It is
interesting to note that in Johns
gospel, the Eucharistic narrative is not
focused on the bread and cup but on the
washing of the feet. Spending oneself in
service to the authentic needs of others
is truly eucharistic. There is an intimate
connection between liturgy/sacrament and
mission/justice. We cannot afford to
forget what we celebrate in the rich house
of God. We cannot afford to leave it to
groups like St Vincent de Paul to see
Lazarus. We are all members of Gods
household.
