A little boy was sent by his mother to buy
a 65 cent loaf of bread. While the baker
was putting the bread into a bag, the boy
noticed that the loaf looked rather small.
"Isn't
that a small loaf of bread for 65
cents?"
"You'll
have less to carry," replied the baker.
The boy put 50 cents on the counter.
"You're 15 cents short," said the
baker.
"That's
right, " replied the boy. "You'll have
less to count." Smart kid!
The
Gospel seems to suggest that Jesus
approves dishonesty on the part of the
steward. Here we have a scheming steward
who ingratiates himself with his
masters debtors. He does some
creative book keeping and financial
restructuring. The result being, that his
master commends him for his business
acumen and for taking the initiative.
Moreover, his master gives no sign that he
felt cheated.
Here is
a man who can see the writing on the wall.
He knows is going to lose his job and
wants to guarantee his future after he
gets the pink slip. He does
not sit around and moan about his fate; he
does something to win favor with his
masters debtors. He knows his own
limitations but that does not deter him
from being daring.
Jesus
is not concerned about the mans
business shrewdness or his apparent
dishonesty. The steward is concerned about
his future and Jesus shows us the lengths
he goes to secure a bright future. Are we
as equally concerned about our eternal
future? We will all leave the employment
of this world and the material things we
have accumulated. All will be left behind.
What then of our future? Jesus does not
ask us to be dishonest this weekend. Jesus
asks to act fully in the world.
