Two brothers went to their rabbi to settle
a longstanding feud. The rabbi got the two
to reconcile their differences and shake
hands. As they were about to leave, he
asked each one to make a wish for the
other in honor of the Jewish New Year. The
first brother turned to the other and
said, "I wish you what you wish me." At
that, the second brother threw up his
hands and said, "See, Rabbi, he's starting
up again!" The Gospel this Sunday is
commonly known as The Prodigal
Son. It is also a story of two
brothers and a loving
father.
In this
classic story of forgiveness, the focus is
really on the Father. We get a glimpse of
God at the feeling level. We feel the
overpowering power of mercy. There is
total blindness and an overwhelming sense
of affection and love for both sons. In
this story there is no recrimination, no
dredging up of the past wrongdoings, no
penalty to be paid.
Yet in
this love story there is also heartbreak;
the son who stayed at home is full of
anger. He has been a good and dutiful son
and always did as his father asked of him.
He is bewildered and confused at his
fathers never-ending forgiveness. As
he did for the son who went away, now the
father goes to meet the elder son who
stayed at home. He pleads with him but
this son cannot comprehend his father. It
is as if he is truly seeing his father for
the first time. The elder brother may have
stayed home with his father, but did he
not learn from his father. He too is in
need of a change of heart, every bit as
much as his younger brother. The young son
eventually got his true inheritance:
forgiveness.

the beliefs and practices of the Catholic
Church? Are you baptized but never
received First Communion? Never were
Confirmed? If you answered yes to any of
the above questions, our RCIA process can
be of help to you. RCIA stands for Rite of
Christian Initiation Adults. It is a
process designed to meet the needs of
adults who are considering joining the
Church or who wish to receive the
sacraments of Initiation ( Baptism,
Eucharist, Confirmation). For more
