It is obvious from this weekends
Gospel that Jesus is not speaking at a
political convention so he can rally the
faithful around his cause. It is a
politically incorrect speech. He is not
trying to win votes or popularity. Jesus
bluntly dampens his listeners
enthusiasm by challenging them in a way
that is off-putting. He is not interested
in gaining a large following by softening
his words and watering down the
requirements needed. He may lose financial
backing and some followers may desert him,
but he leaves his listeners under no
illusion about the cost of discipleship.
Nothing short of total commitment, even
life itself is required.
Jesus
is not just saying, Love me more
than family. He is saying that it is
not just a matter of degree. It is a
question of either/or, you choose me or
not. Jesus is the cross (roads) in our
life at which we make a stark
choice.
Whole-hearted
service is demanded and there is no room
for compromise. The price to be paid is
cross carrying. The cross can be as heart
breaking as your family disowning you when
you become Christian, or as lonely as
being rejected by colleagues and childhood
friends in following the call of
Christ.
At
moments when the struggle seems too great,
it is good to remember we are not alone;
Christ is walking with us every step of
the road.
When
the crowds dispersed after the hoopla and
festival in Jerusalem, when the crowds had
their way with Christ, two of his
followers went home broken-hearted and
devastated. They had nailed their future
to Jesus and he was nailed to the cross.
However on that Easter Sunday morning he
walked with them, he talked with them, he
ate with them. They were not alone.
