A young woman asked for an appointment
with her pastor to talk with him about a
recurring sin about which she was worried.
When she saw him, she said, "Pastor, I
have become aware of a sin in my life
which I cannot control. Every time I am at
church I begin to look around at the other
women, and I realize that I am the
prettiest one in the whole congregation.
None of the others can compare with my
beauty. What can I do about this sin?" The
pastor replied, "Mary, that's not a sin,
why that's just a mistake!"
Humility
was not one of Marys strong
points.
In
Lukes Gospel this weekend, we find
Jesus is not impressed with the sight of
guests pushing, shoving, or scrambling for
good seats and maneuvering themselves into
the places of honor. His concern is deeper
than etiquette or table
manners.
In the
mind of some people humility is equated
with a poor self-image, weakness or
spinelessness. Its as if humility is
a character flaw. Humility is truth. It is
an attempt to try and see ourselves as God
sees us. It is being honest about
ourselves without being pompous, boastful
or proud, realizing that we are what we
are before God and nothing more. It is an
admission that our talents come from God,
and that in fact we are earthen vessels
endowed with the precious gift of
life.
Another
Mary, the humble servant of God, tells us
that in Gods eyes the proud person
takes a very lowly place because God
rejects the proud and raises the humble.
In her hymn of truth she tells us that it
is the Almighty who has done great things
for her. God has done great things for
each of us and we are all of eternal value
in His eyes.
