Good old Irving was driving down the
freeway when his cell phone rang. It was
his wife. Irving dear, I just heard
on the news that some crazy man is driving
his car down the freeway in the wrong
direction. Please be
careful.
I
am trying to be careful, he replied,
but theres not just one car
going the wrong way - theres
hundreds of them!
On the
road but going in the wrong
direction.
Jesus
has pretty harsh words to say in the
gospel to his supposedly genuine
followers. We ate and drank in your
presence. You taught in our streets.
But Jesus replied, I do not know
where you come from. Away from me, you
evildoers. This is disturbing news
because we eat and drink in Jesus
presence; at Mass we eat his body and
drink his blood. It would appear that
passive participation in Mass is not
enough. Receiving Holy Communion without
being changed/transformed is of little
spiritual value. What we do at Mass must
influence the way we live once we leave
the church.
We are
a work in progress. We continually need to
be fed at the table of His Word and His
Body. Our celebration of the Eucharist is
meant to mold us into the people we are
called to be. We have not yet passed
through that narrow
gate.
You may
have noticed that the Book of the Gospels
is carried into the church in procession
at the beginning of our celebration but
not carried out. The Book of the Gospels
is left on the lectern. We are meant to
bring the Word of God with us as we leave;
not as inactive carriers but as people
transformed. We are challenged to bring
the Word of God with us, to be more than
just church Christians.
