Grandma had just arrived for a long visit,
and her little grandson was jumping up and
down for joy. Im sure happy to
see you, Grandma. Now maybe daddy will do
the trick hes been promising
us.
Grandma
was mystified, What trick is that,
Patrick?
Well,
said the boy, I heard him tell mommy
that if you came to visit hed climb
the walls.
There
is nothing so agonizingly painful as a
family feud; divisions and infighting can
destroy individuals and families. In the
Gospel this weekend, Jesus appears no
longer the bringer of peace or a
peacemaker. He does not accept peace at
any price. He is telling us we have to
make choices, and honest, moral choices
sometimes put us in conflict with the
people around us. He had to go through the
agony of decision-making in the garden of
whether he would accept his baptism of
death and resurrection or reject the will
of God. He demands the same of
us.
To
follow Jesus Christ is not a stroll in the
park, it is not all sweetness and light.
It demands commitment and following Jesus
down that rocky road to Jerusalem. The
gospel is forcing us to face the fact that
if we are followers of Jesus, conflict and
division are unavoidable. He never
promised us a journey without
crosses.
This
gospel calls us to stand up and be
counted. If we accept the teachings of
Jesus we will be rejected and ridiculed by
others, maybe even by family and
friends.
Jesus
met Pontius Pilate not because he was
mister nice guy but because he
spoke the truth and followed where truth
led. We are called to follow the
Way, the Truth and the Life
and Jesus is saying that the road is not
easy but he has gone before us, so come
follow him.
