The Letter to the Hebrews in the Mass
this weekend tells us that, Faith is
the realization of what is hoped for and
evidence of things not seen. Our
faith and evidence of things not seen is
based on the past. It is based on the
reality of all that God has done first in
the events of the Old Testament and then
in a special way in the death and
resurrection of his Son. The faith we hold
so prayerfully is our tradition and
heritage, and our future. In the Old
Testament the Jews could never think of
trust in God and not recall the story of
Abraham their father in faith. He left
family, friends and country and set off as
a pilgrim on lifes journey. The only
thing he had to hold onto was a promise
from God. His faith was unshakable. At one
stage, you may recall, he was willing to
sacrifice his only son Isaac, if it was
the will of God. Abraham never knew where
the road of life would lead him but he
believed that God would not let him
down.
Jesus
sought to instill in the hearts of his
followers the confidence, which comes
through faith and trust. He himself lived
faith fully as he embraced his passion and
death. Jesus is the trustworthy one. We
must be the confident ones, knowing he is
with us.
As we
journey through life we are asked to
commit ourselves to Christ. We do not know
where life will take us. We do not know
the future. We are asked to trust, to
trust that Jesus Christ will not lead us
astray.
The
life of Abraham maybe a past event in the
pages of history but the faith, confidence
and hope displayed in his life are relived
each day as we commit ourselves in our
time and circumstances to Jesus Christ.
