Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.

— Psalm 90:12

This weekend we hear the story of the very rich man and all the wealth he had accumulated. His mind was focused on amassing and safeguarding his material goods. By all accounts he had more than he would ever need. There is a tendency to switch off when we hear this gospel and think it applies only to the rich. We have to remember that Jesus taught this parable to people who were poor. He always associated with the poor. The man who shouted the question was not above mingling with the crowd that followed Jesus. The answer Jesus gave applies to all of us.

Christ is warning us of going it alone, and trying to hold our future in our own hands – gloating over possessions and settling ourselves securely in life’s comforts. He is giving us a word of caution about greed and the hold possessions can have over us. Greed and meanness are not confined to the rich and prosperous. We can all fall victim to the lure of possessions to the detriment of our Christian vocation. The wealth we carry, we carry in our hearts, everything else we leave behind.

Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, reminds us that what is judged a failure by people can actually be a success before God. He did not give us possessions but he did leave us wealth beyond our dreams.

An American paid a visit to a renowned rabbi in Israel. He was astonished to see the rabbi’s home was only a simple room filled with books, plus a table and a bench.

‘Rabbi,’ asked the tourist, ‘where is your furniture?’

‘Where is yours?’ asked the rabbi.

‘Mine?’ asked the puzzled American. ‘But I’m only passing through.’

‘So am I,’ said the rabbi.
