The bookstores are full of self-help
books. There is even a whole category of
books for Dummies From
computers to physical exercise there is a
book to tell you how to do it. Maybe there
is a book out there entitled How to
Pray for dummies. I havent
come across it yet. In any event, nothing
worthwhile comes easy. Effort has to be
made if we are to achieve something
worthwhile and lasting in our
lives.
I
dont believe the apostles were
dummies. They felt the need to pray, to
imitate Jesus. They saw how prayer gave
wholeness to the life of Jesus. They saw
how Jesus had an abiding relationship with
God his Father- Abba. They saw
how prayer sustained Jesus and they wanted
it in their lives. At each major moment in
the life of Jesus he spent time in prayer.
The disciples knew they need the gift of
prayer. Jesus taught them.
Our
prayer is not trying to contact the
missing God, but to allow the present God
to enter our lives. Our God is not aloof.
He is as present as a parent, a family
member, a dear friend who cares about us
here and now.
The
focus of prayer takes us outside of
ourselves. Jesus says our, not
my, or mine, but our Father. In that
opening word alone was a lesson for the
disciples and us. The center of our prayer
is God not me. Jesus taught
his disciple who needed help. We always
have to keep in mind that prayer is always
Godgiven. We should not confuse the gift
of grace with some achievement of our own.
Let us spend some time with the Teacher
and the Word given to us.
