A family was preparing to move to
California. The night before they left,
their little five-year-old knelt to say
his prayers: Thank you God, for this
day, for the birds and flowers and all
good things. God bless mommy and daddy and
all my friends. The child paused for
a moment and then concluded,
Good-bye God. Were moving to
California. Is California outside
Gods love and care? In the gospel of
today we have two devoted followers of
Jesus. The hardworking Martha gets
irritated with the idling Mary. Martha
believes that Mary should be doing
something more productive than listening
to Jesus. After all, if the work is not
done, Jesus goes without his dinner. Mary
gets the praise for apparently doing
nothing.
Scripture
scholars point out that the request of
Martha was less about voicing resentment
and more about expressing concern that
Mary would miss out on the traditional
blessing given to those who offer
hospitality to others. Yet Mary has
already received something more important
than any worldly blessing. To listen
attentively to another person is extremely
difficult. To give your full attention
while somebody is speaking is hard work.
Try praying for half an hour. We have to
make a real effort. Prayer does not come
easy. We all know how our minds wander
from the present to the future to the past
and back again.
The
gospel is asking us to look at our busy
lives and to take time out to sit quietly
with the Lord. If we do not take time to
listen to the word of God and let it
permeate our lives we may become slaves to
our work. Time with the Lord is not
wasted. It is not unproductive time. God
has not moved. Maybe we should move closer
to the Lord.
