Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
15th Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 15, 2007

Christ Jesus . . . is the head of the body, the church.

— Colossians 1:15, 18

When we come to celebrate the Eucharist we come as a community of faith. We come with open hearts and minds. We come to learn again our calling and stand in solidarity as Christians and as sinners seeking conversion. We admit our sins, ‘what I have done and what I have failed to do’, to God and each other. Often times we know what we have done, especially if we have done something unchristian to another person. However failure to do something is not as glaringly obvious. We fail to see a wrong, and right it. We fail because we do not see anything wrong. We fail to be aware of the plight of another person. We might in some cases think it is somebody else’s problem, or excuse ourselves as being too busy.

The lawyer in the gospel today knew the law, but did he know the author of the law? The lawyer could quote the law but did he know the repercussions of keeping the law? The spirit of the law calls for a person’s total engagement, heart, soul, mind and strength, in responding to the commandment to love God, neighbor and self. To illustrate this Jesus tells us of the Samaritan. This was a person looked down upon by the Jews as unclean, who chose to help the beaten man. The priest and the Levite were upright men. They were pious and law-abiding people. The same could not be said of the Samaritan. He was a man despised and yet he helped a fellow human being in distress. It does not do the Samaritan any justice to think of him as a ‘nice guy’. He is more than that. He is the Christ figure. Of the three individuals on the road to Jericho, the Samaritan was the only person with his eyes open.
