“Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.”

— Acts 13:25

Recently I have been reflecting on the number of baptisms I have celebrated over the years. They have been many and varied, from infants to adults, and all ages in between. Like the people in the Gospel who wondered at the birth of John, “What, then, will this child be? For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.” I’ve also been wondering, “Which of them will be the first to be named in the calendar of Saints?” This is not an impossible hope or an impractical expectation, but a real opportunity and challenge for all baptized Christians. The words of the prophet Isaiah apply to all of us. Through baptism we are called to be ‘a light to the nations’ that the love of God ‘may reach to the ends of the earth.’

We may think to be called to sainthood or numbered in the calendar of saints is overreaching. We might think it presumptuous and egotistical. We know all too well our unworthiness. Looking at our past we might give up. In baptism we are called forward not backwards, we not called to relive the past but to live in the present as Christians. Christ calls us and he sees in us the wonderful person we can become.

We don’t have to travel to the ends of the earth to give light. We could start with greater love for family, neighbors, and our fellow parishioners. We can shed the light of kindness, compassion, and forgiveness in our daily lives. We can show genuine concern for those treated unjustly.

Like John the Baptist we were born with a divine purpose, we have been called to new life in Christ. Living the call we have received is essential. We count, what we do counts, and Jesus is counting on us.

Congratulations
Carol and Art Dikas celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 22nd.

WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT?
Why do we light votive prayer candles in church?

A person can only pray for so long. Lighting a candle serves to prolong this prayer beyond our presence in the church. The candle remains behind and symbolizes the desire for the prayer to continue.

So when we light candles in prayer, our intentions remain present even when we are gone. Next time you pass a candle rack, help prolong others’ offering prayers by offering one for the intentions of the people who lit them.
