Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ
June 10, 2007

As often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,
you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.

— 1 Corinthians 11:26

The feast of Corpus Christi, which we celebrate this Sunday, is a celebration of the Lord’s generosity to us. He offers Himself as food and drink to satisfy our spiritual and material hunger as we journey through life. The Eucharist is God’s presence among us, God giving himself to us in a most personal and unique way. “Take this all of you and eat it, this is my body….”He gives himself to us, not because we are perfect, but because we are his.

He knows us, he knows every intimate detail of our lives, how we get lost, stray, and become entangled in the snares of this world. He knows our joys and celebrations, our dreams and heart wishes. He knows us from the inside out and loves every breath we take.

This is why he gives us himself in the Eucharist – as nourishment to heal our brokenness and food to give us joy. The Lord gives us His body and blood to eat and drink.

As we celebrate the Eucharist we ask ourselves, “are we becoming what we eat and drink?” What we celebrate this Sunday morning is not so different from what took place on the hillside or the Upper Room. The Lord is present offering himself to us. We cannot be truly present at the Eucharist without a desire to change and set out on the road traveled by Christ, trying to live in a caring and sharing way. It is the life we live during the week that we bring to the community Eucharist on Sunday. We are strengthened nourished and fortified to go out and to live what we have celebrated. Christ gives us His body to eat and His blood to drink. This is the awesome reality of our celebration and who we are called to be.
