The explosive power of roadside bombs can
be seen on the nightly news. Car bombs and
suicide bombers kill indiscriminately and
their results are shown on a regular basis
on the evening news.
They
are destructive and cause wholesale
slaughter of the innocent. Twisted metal
and fireballs are the stuff of nightly
reports on television. This destructive
power highlights the darker side of
humanity; the side that kills and
maims.
Power
can be destructive or constructive. Power
can be used in at least two ways: it can
be unleashed, or it can be harnessed. The
energy in ten gallons of gasoline, for
instance, can be released explosively by
dropping a lighted match into the gas
tank.
Or it
can be channeled through the engine of an
automobile in a controlled burn and used
to transport a person 350
miles.
Explosions
are spectacular, but controlled burns have
lasting effect, staying
power.
The
Holy Spirit works both ways. At Pentecost,
the Spirit exploded on the scene; the room
shook and there were tongues of
fire (Acts 2:3). Thousands were
affected by one burst of Gods power.
But the Holy Spirit also works through the
church. It was in a sense as if God began
to tap the Holy Spirits power for
the long haul. Through worship,
fellowship, and service, Christians are
provided with staying
power.
The
Holy Spirit came upon the disciples in
that locked room. They had let down their
friend and teacher. When Jesus needed them
they were not there for him. Now at
Pentecost He would always be there for
them. A new power was unleashed upon the
world. This is not a power to destroy, but
power to renew, to forgive, and to love.
We been caught up in the explosion, the
slow burn, we have the staying power of
the Spirit.
