May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you!

— Psalm 67:6

There is a story about a man who came up to a monk and said, “When I look at you, I see a pig!” And the monk said, “And when I look at you, I see Christ.” The man said, “How is that?” The monk replied, “Well, what you see is what you are on the inside. If you see Christ you are Christ, if you see a pig…” There is a great deal of truth in the saying, “We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.” Jesus tells us in St. John’s gospel, “Whoever loves me will keep my word, an my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling in him.” That is the truth about us. In baptism we have been claimed by Christ, we have died and risen with Him. We belong to Him and he has made his home in us. It is good to remind ourselves about our true identity, about who we are deep down inside our innermost self. We are so loved by God that he will leave ninety-nine sheep to seek out one lost little lamb; He is humble enough to wash feet; He is passionate enough to suffer and die for us; He forgives not once but over and over again. Jesus our savor is wild about us. We must be very special for Jesus to be so in love with us.

Not enough to be with is, to walk beside us, to be in our company; Jesus wants to be at the very center of our being, in every sinew, fiber, thought and heartbeat. So when you look out at the world what do you see? When you look in the mirror who looks back at you?
