Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Second Sunday of Easter
(Divine Mercy Sunday)
April 15, 2007

Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever.

— Revelation 1:18a

Peace be with you,” were the first words the disciples heard from the Risen Lord. His gift to them was to breathe on them the Holy Spirit giving them new spiritual life. He didn’t rebuke them for abandoning him. He didn’t scold them for their weakness and unbelief; instead He gave them peace.

The Risen Lord did not appear to us as dramatically or as vividly as he did to his disciples. Nevertheless he has come to us and has given us the gift of his peace and his presence. He has called and chosen us in baptism. Ultimately we believe because Christ wants us to believe. He sustains our belief; it’s his gift of himself to us. It is also a gift we hold in fragile vessels. Christ has revealed himself to us in Scripture, in the Old and New testaments. He gives himself to us in an intimate and communal way in the Eucharist. He is our savior who died for us. There is no God like him; he is all-powerful, all merciful. He is everything we can say about him and then some.

It is a belief of apparent contradictions, one God, the Most Holy Trinity. He is Spirit, yet appeared in the flesh in Jesus; Father, Son and Spirit. Divine yet human. He is above our human understanding. “He has spoken through the prophets”. “The Word became flesh”. “He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures.”

Thomas wanted proof. Jesus challenged his unbelief. The same Lord comes to us each day. I pray the Peace of the Lord be on St Dunstan parish. And as we gather to celebrate the Eucharist we will recognize the Risen Lord in the breaking of bread.
