Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
April 1, 2007

The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced.

— Isaiah 50:7a

Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The adoring crowds acclaim him king. To them, it seems, Jesus has achieved his goal. He is their leader. They have a hero, a person with power, somebody who can do great things.

For Jesus it is the beginning of the last week of his earthly life. The expectations of the crowd are not his and a clash of worlds is about to take place. A fight to the death begins. Only One will emerge victorious. During this most solemn week of the church year we are invited to travel with those few friends who followed Jesus to Calvary. They are a minority, a scared motley group who seem to be completely lost. Although they are scared they are unable to run away from their Lord. They have traveled with him through the high moments of miracles to the quiet times when he spoke about the coming of the kingdom. Place yourself in the company of Mary his mother, Peter his friend or some other follower. Talk to them, listen to them, and follow closely Jesus of Nazareth. This journey is real, the people are real and Jesus is going to his death. He wants the cross to touch our lives. The story of this week is God’s story. It is the story of God’s presence revealed in Jesus of Nazareth. These are the days of grief and glory. This week is the story of creation and recreation. It is a love story. We are his followers and we cannot be detached from these decisive events. Travel the road this week with Jesus and He will call you by name on Sunday morning.

A LENTEN TENEBRAE SERVICE, The Journey to the Cross, Palm Sunday, April 1 at 3 pm, St. Robert Church, San Bruno. Join us for a service of darkness that takes us from Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem to his crucifixion. This service of word and music sets the mood for the most significant week of the Liturgical Year, and helps to prepare us for the Easter celebration ahead. A reception will follow.

Christian One-Liners….
