Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Fifth Sunday of Lent
March 25, 2007

I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

— Philippians 3:8

“Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” So goes the belief of the old nursery rhyme. But it is not true. Names and labels can injure and destroy just as effectively as stones. We wouldn’t think of picking up a heavy stone to bash in somebody’s head. That’s not Christian! But there are other stones that we keep close at hand and use regularly. Hard cruel words hurled like rocks, opinionated judgments, and sharp barbs of spite can do enormous damage. They are the weapons of assassins of the heart, destroyers of dreams, killers of the spirit.

The dramatic scene in this Sunday’s Gospel is a familiar one in which the “good people” of the community parade a woman before Jesus. She is publicly labeled an adulteress and they are ready to killer her. There is no mention of the man. He is the coward who has escaped the same judgment and maybe now has joined the brave men seeking her death.

They did not care about the woman; they only wanted to trap Jesus. These men were no better than the man she was caught with in adultery; they were using the woman, this time publicly for their own pleasure. Jesus could see through their hypocrisy. Was he furious with them? Did he need time to calm his anger? Is that why he wrote in the sand?

Jesus was not blind; he saw the sin of the woman and the sin of the men accusing her. He challenged them: “Let the man among you who has no sin be the first to cast a stone at her.” Of course they all went away. The woman was pardoned and instructed to avoid sin. Words can break us, words can kill us, but the Word of God gives forgiveness and life.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.

Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days , the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

Parishioners are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and one of the three daily Masses at 6:30 am, 8:00 am and 5:10 pm.

Stations of the Cross are held Fridays at 2:15 pm & 7 pm.

Parishioners, mark your calendars. St. Dunstan Parish Reconciliation Service will be held on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 pm in the church. For those of you who may be interested, St. Robert Parish will be having a Reconciliation Service on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 pm.
