Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Fourth Sunday of Lent
March 18, 2007

Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.

— 2 Corinthians 5:17

In an earlier time in the Church there was what is popularly know as ‘public confessions’. Sinners did not publicly proclaim their sins to all and sundry, but they rather allowed themselves to be known as sinners. On Ash Wednesday they confessed their sins to the bishop. This was done publicly. They could be seen approaching the bishop and speaking but nobody heard what sins they had committed. Ashes were sprinkled on their heads and their names were entered into the ‘Book of Penitents’. The bishop then assigned a penance, which was to be performed during the entire season of Lent. This penance was appropriate to the sin and was seen as healing rather than punishment. It was the duty of the Christian community to pray and support the penitents.
The penance was suited to the sin. If people had been greedy and selfish, they were required to give alms to the poor. If they had been self-indulgent and gluttonous they were directed to abstain from food. If they had been careless in their relationship with God they were to being to learn the art and love of prayer.
On Holy Thursday the penitents received absolution from the bishop and so were prepared to celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and the Easter Triduum.
We all need to have an honest talk with ourselves like the prodigal son in the gospel. After having rejected his father’s love, broken his heart, squandered his inheritance and ending up in a pigsty, he came to his senses. He resolved to abandon his self-indulgent life and return to his father. He decided to confess his sins and ask to be forgiven. His father, saw him, ran to him, forgave him, embraced him and celebrated his return.
Our Father will do no less for us when we turn to him for forgiveness.
The Knights of Columbus, St. Dunstan Council #11041, is having a fund-raiser for the Madison Kitz Medical Fund on May 5, 2007, at the Parish Center. It will be a dinner with Silent Auction and Live Auction items. If you have any item you would like to donate, please contact Dan Capodanno at 588-0324. We accept any new item and we especially are looking for gift certificates to restaurants, merchandise stores, etc and specialty items such as timeshares, vacation weekends, etc. No item is too big or too small for this event.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.

Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days , the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

Parishioners are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend Morning Prayer at 7:15am, and one of the three daily Masses at 6:30am, 8:00am and 5:10pm.

Stations of the Cross are held Fridays at 2:15 pm & 7 pm.

Parishioners, mark your calendars. St. Dunstan Parish Reconciliation Service will be held on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 pm in the church. For those of you who may be interested, St. Robert Parish will be having a Reconciliation Service on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 pm.
