Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Third Sunday of Lent
March 11, 2007

The LORD secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed.

— Psalm 103:6

This Sunday in our Gospel we will hear Jesus refer to tragedies which recently occurred. From these two calamities Jesus draws a lesson: to judge others as guilty of sin is not the correct response, but to think about our need of repentance is. Lent is a time we look at our own lives and examine our lives as followers of Christ. We are asked to name the sin in our lives and repent.

Unfortunately, in our modern society it is very difficult to repent—and not because we don’t have anything to repent of. On the contrary, we live in a world that is sinful, but we don’t name the sin a sin. We dress it up in other colors and call it by another name. Just consider the Seven Deadly Sins: pride, anger, lust, greed, envy, gluttony, and sloth. In bygone generations people were taught to avoid these seven attitudes that invariably lead to sin. Somehow I don’t believe they have been removed from the human condition. They are still with us. So it’s certainly not a lack of sins that makes it hard for us to repent. The problem is that we frequently do not recognize these sins as sins. The trouble is we have redefined sin to be nothing more than either personal preferences or the result of unfair circumstances or just plain bad luck. We have gone so overboard trying not to be judgmental or intolerant, we can no longer even bring ourselves to label any behavior—no matter how vile or harmful—as a sin. At best we call it “a constitutionally protected personal choice”; and at worst we call it any one of a plethora of illnesses.

On Wednesday March 28th we will have a parish reconciliation service in preparation for Easter. Only sinners need come.

The Knights of Columbus, St. Dunstan Council #11041, is having a fund-raiser for the Madison Kitz Medical Fund on May 5, 2007, at the Parish Center. It will be a dinner with Silent Auction and Live Auction items. If you have any item you would like to donate, please contact Dan Capodanno at 588-0324. We accept any new item and we especially are looking for gift certificates to restaurants, merchandise stores, etc and specialty items such as timeshares, vacation weekends, etc. No item is too big or too small for this event.

Christian One-Liners….

We are called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.

Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days , the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

Parishioners are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, and to attend Morning Prayer at 7:15 am, and one of the three daily Masses at 6:30 am, 8:00 am and 5:10 pm.

Stations of the Cross are held Fridays at 2:15 pm & 7 pm.
