Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Second Sunday of Lent
March 4, 2007

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?

— Psalm 27:1

As we journey towards the Easter Sacraments, we are on a pilgrimage of renewal. We journey with Jesus Christ, who gives meaning to our lives and has claimed us for himself in baptism.

Lent affords us an opportunity, through prayer fasting and almsgiving for putting our house in order. It teaches us that the road to heaven is by the sweat of our brow through the daily chores of work and putting up with the everyday frustrations and disappointments of living. Lent also teaches us that we are not alone. Christ has laid his hands on us and said, “Get up! Do not be afraid.”

Our Gospel of this weekend relates an extraordinary occurrence: the Transfiguration of Jesus. His three intimate friends, Peter, James and John, were allowed to glimpse the glory of Jesus. The apostles in a sense get a sneak preview of the reality that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus begins to reveal the Paschal Mystery. He will be lead through suffering to joy, through humiliation to exaltation, and through death to life.

The message that the apostles hear from the cloud is an active command: Listen to Jesus. The invitation is to trust the way of life of Jesus, to risk following Jesus. We began our life in Christ at baptism. After water was poured on our head as an infant or adult, a white cloth was offered as a reminder that we had become like Jesus in his transfiguration.

As the transfiguration of Jesus was but a prelude to his resurrection, so baptism directs us to a future event. That event is our sharing in Christ’s resurrection. Our baptism calls us to let the glory of God shine through us so that others can catch a glimpse of that glory.

KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS NEEDED!
St. Dunstan TERESA Committee

We need baby blankets, booties and hats for the babies at Birth Right International. We are in need of knitters or crocheters to make these items for our parish wide baby shower on Sunday, May 6th. You will all be invited, more details to follow in April. So get your knitting and crochet needles out and make some blankets, booties and/or hats. Birth Right International is an organization that assists girls and women who are distressed by an unplanned pregnancy; focusing on helping bring their babies to birth.

Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days , the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.
