Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
First Sunday of Lent
February 25, 2007

The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.

— Romans 10:8

Two youngsters in different baptismal classes were overheard exchanging notes on their progress. One announced proudly, “We’re up to original sin.” The other scoffed and said, “That’s nothing, we’re past redemption.”

We are not past redemption but we all need to recognize sin in our lives and change.

“A clean heart create for me, O Lord, put a steadfast spirit within me.” These words from Psalm 51, which we pray on Ash Wednesday, reminds us that Lent is a season that signals a change of heart. This is a very special time for all Christians. The Church offers us this time to reflect on who we are. It is also an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our Christian vocation and renew our own baptismal promises.

Lent is a time for us to get back to basics, to replenish the soil in which our Christian faith grows. To reflect on the very nature of who we are, and what it means to be a Christian today. At the core of our being we have been claimed by Christ. This is the truth of who we are and why we can pray, “each year you give us this joyful season when we prepare to celebrate the Paschal Mystery with mind and heart renewed.”

This is not about making New Year resolutions in February. It is about ashes and the cross. It’s about money, food, and how we spend our time. It’s about sin and sorrow. It’s about life and death. It’s about Christ’s life death and resurrection.

Fasting and self-denial, backed up by prayer and almsgiving, keep us growing in friendship with Christ and young at heart.
