The advice of Jesus in the Gospel this
Sunday is often regarded as a recipe for
the weak. If a person strikes you on
one cheek, give him the other as
well. Is this some kind of Christian
training for those who want to be
professional victims, to qualify as for
being a wimp? I dont think so. It
takes extraordinary courage and strength
of character, the gift of the Holy Spirit,
to be able to turn the other cheek. We
have an excellent example in the person of
Pope John Paul 11. After he recovered from
the attack on his life when he was shot in
St. Peters Square, he went to visit
his assailant in prison. He went there and
offered him forgiveness and
reconciliation. We have all seen the
photographs of the Pope and the would-be
assassin together in the prison cell.
Turn the other cheek. Another
example is the late Cardinal Bernadine,
Archbishop of Chicago. He was falsely
accused of having molested a man. One can
only imagine what devastation the
allegation did to the Cardinal. Eventually
the man recanted his story. It would have
been understandable if the Cardinal had
railed in indignation against his
dishonest accuser. It would have been
understandable if he sued the man and his
lawyers. Instead the Cardinal sought him
out to forgive him. Turn the other
cheek. Christ did not call us to be
wimps but to be his followers. We are
called from the cross, a place of
degradation but also a place of
forgiveness. Surely if there was ever a
time for retaliation and revenge it was
from the cross. Father forgive
them
Forgiveness,
turning the other cheek is answering the
call of Christ. To live the call of the
Gospel demands courage, and the inner
strength of the Holy Spirit.
