“Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied.”

— Luke 6:20-21a

A man went into a store and told the assistant that he wanted “Irish Soda Bread”.

The assistant looked at him a bit strangely and asked him, “Are you Irish?”

The man was offended: “Well, yes I am, but let me ask you: If I wanted French bread, would you ask if I was French?”

“Or if I wanted sourdough bread, would you ask if I was from San Francisco? Would you?”

“Well, no,” said the assistant.

“So why then do you ask me if I’m Irish, just because I asked for Irish soda bread?”

“Well,” replied the sales assistant, “because this is a hardware store.”

Winners and losers, - the world is full of them. I’ve often asked myself, “Why am I so blessed”? I have access to stores with an unbelievably choice of foodstuffs, I live in a good house, and I have health insurance to look after me in time of sickness.” “What I done anything to deserve my good fortune”? And more importantly, “What am I doing for my less fortunate brothers and sisters?” Nobody in his right mind wants to be poor, sad, starving or persecuted. Yet millions of people are and will be in this condition all their lives. They did nothing to live in these circumstances. They are born in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Jesus does not idealize poverty as a value to be sought for its own sake. He condemns it as unbefitting any child of God.

The message contained in the gospel is both severe and challenging. We are called not to worship wealth, food or comfort, but to worship God. In worshiping God we cannot forget our suffering brothers and sister.

There are winners and losers, but if I don’t help maybe I am the real loser. “I was hungry……….
