Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
4th Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 28, 2007

Faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

— 1 Corinthians 13:13

A couple was driving home from church when the wife turned to her husband and asked, “Did you see that strange hat that Mrs. O’Brien was wearing?” “No” said her husband, “I didn’t.” She continued and asked, “Did you see that tacky looking couple in the pew in front of us?” He thought a moment and said, “No I didn’t.” “Well did you see Bill Smith, don’t you think he aught to get a haircut?” “Sorry dear, I just didn’t notice,” said her husband. In annoyance she said, “You know John, sometimes I wonder why you go to church!”

Expectations! They can make us or break us. We usually see what we are looking for. In large part our expectations determine what we are able to see and hear and hope for. If we expect the best from others, and ourselves that is what we are likely to get. If we expect little, we’ll get little.

In the gospel this weekend, Jesus caught the crowd in the synagogue off guard. ‘They were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.’ For a few minutes he had them spellbound and he captivated them with his vision of what human life could be. But then their narrow expectation about God and life and what’s possible kicked in.

They shout down Jesus. “Who does he think he is?” He is only a carpenter and ‘the son of Joseph’. They believe they know God and Jesus in not part of their belief. To them Jesus was speaking a foreign language. It was too new and world shattering.

Each of us is called to be Christian. Do we keep our eye fixed on Jesus and the possibilities for greatness? Christ has called us to greatness; do we just want to be better than the Joneses?
