In the past number of weeks some
politicians have been considering running
for the position of President of the
United States. They are looking for their
partys nomination. Committees have
been formed to explore their likelihood of
success. Although the next Presidential
election occurs in 2008, the groundwork is
being prepared. They will look at their
support base, their policies and their
financial viability. They are seeking to
win the minds, hearts and pockets of the
people. They will surely also promise a
better and brighter future.
How
different the beginning of Jesus
campaign! He had no committee, no campaign
manager, no financial backing, and no
previous public speaking
engagements.
In
todays gospel passage we have Jesus
returning from the temptations in the
desert. In the synagogue of his hometown,
he reads from the prophet Isaiah. This
scripture passage is his choice and gives
us an insight into who he is and how he
saw his ministry. This is his inaugural
address and underscores the ideals and
goals of the kingdom of God. The
Spirit of the Lord is upon me
.to
bring good news to the poor
.to
proclaim liberty to captives
.sight
to the blind
.let the oppressed go
free
.to proclaim a year favorable to
the Lord.
Jesus
promises his followers a glorious future.
He
comes from an obscure background. His
choice of followers is questionable. Some
of his moneyed friends are sleazy tax
collectors. He has no political savvy, no
financial base, no broad based support and
he has no image-maker on his team. His
doctrine is too radical; he upsets the
status quo. There is talk of infighting
among his closest aids, and his mental
health becomes an issue. In time of
trouble his followers fled. He never did
gain any political office.
No
wonder he died an apparent failure;
executed as a common criminal.
