Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory.

— 1saiah 62:2

We all have heard the nursery rhyme: ‘Humpty Dumpty’. When he fell ‘all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.’ A mother had just repeated this rhyme to her four-year-old son. The boy thought for a moment and then he suddenly came up with a solution. With the confidence only the young possess, he said, ‘Jesus could have done it’. Yes indeed, Jesus could have put him back together. Jesus can make all things new.

The Gospel of this weekend is often the one chosen by the bride and groom for their wedding. Jesus was invited to the wedding of a young couple. It was a festive occasion. There was joy and laughter. In the midst of all the festivities they ran short of wine. After some gentle persuasion from his mother to save the wedding feast from catastrophe, Jesus performs his first miracle at Cana of Galilee. The miracle or ‘sign’ was more than just an act of kindness. What Jesus did was more than saving the host and the couple from embarrassment because the wine ran out. This was the first sign that something new had entered our world. Here was a man, who could bring about change: who had power to change the very nature of human existence.

The miracle at Cana is about Jesus changing us. In many ways we stand empty. It is about going to him with open hearts and empty hands so that he can touch us and fill us with his life. Cana was the sign of the power of Jesus to change people to make all things new.

He did not come to put us back together again, but to make us new; he did not come to fix us up but to raise us up and fill us with his Spirit.

Have you ever thought about becoming a Catholic priest? You are invited to a discernment retreat on Friday, January 26 at 4 pm through Sunday, January 28 at St. Patrick’s Seminary to better understand if a vocation to the ministry of God’s priesthood is for you!

Single men, 21 years of age or older, are invited to explore the possibility of a priestly vocation.

The weekend is designed to provide the tools needed to help you determine if God might be calling you to a vocation in the priesthood. Discernment Retreat will include prayer, discussion and presentations about the priesthood, group interaction and following the daily routine of a seminarian. For further information contact Rev. Thomas Day, Director of Vocations of the SF Archdiocese at 415-614-5684.
