More than a century ago, a great sailing
ship was stranded off the coast of South
America. Week after week the ship lay
there in the still waters. There
wasnt a hint of a breeze. The
captain was desperate; the crew was dying
of thirst. Then on the far horizon, a
steamship appeared. It was headed directly
towards them. As it drew near the captain
called out, We need water! Give us
water!
The
steamship replied, Lower your
buckets where you
are.
The
captain was furious at this cavalier
response. It was not what he expected. In
desperation he called again all the
louder, Please give us water, we are
dying.
The
steamer gave the same reply Lower
you buckets where you are and
proceeded to sail away.
The
captain was beside himself with anger and
despair. He went below to his
cabin.
When
nobody was looking, a young sailor lowered
his bucket into the sea and brought it up.
When he tasted the contents it was
perfectly fresh water. The ship was out of
sight of the mouth of the Amazon. This
might river flows with such force that its
fresh water is uncontaminated miles off
shore. They had been sitting on the top of
fresh water all the time.
The
captain could not see the fresh water that
surrounded him. He looked for help and was
not satisfied with the answer.
The
fresh, life-giving water of Christ
surrounds us. We were immersed in this
living water at baptism. Through the
incarnation, death and resurrection of
Christ we are changed forever. We are born
through water and the Spirit. The Holy
Spirit of God has lived within us from the
first second of our life. As the three
wise kings might tell us, we have
treasures to bring, it all depends on
where we look.
Have you ever thought about becoming a
Catholic priest? You are invited to a
discernment retreat on Friday, January 26
at 4 pm through Sunday, January 28 at St.
Patricks Seminary to better
understand if a vocation to the ministry
of Gods priesthood is for
you!
Single
men, 21 years of age or older, are invited
to explore the possibility of a priestly
vocation.
The
weekend is designed to provide the tools
needed to help you determine if God might
be calling you to a vocation in the
priesthood. Discernment Retreat will
include prayer, discussion and
presentations about the priesthood, group
interaction and following the daily
routine of a seminarian. For further
information contact Rev. Thomas Day,
Director of Vocations of the SF
Archdiocese at 415-614-5684.
