Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Fourth Sunday of Advent
December 24, 2006

O LORD of hosts, look down from heaven and see; take care of this vine, and protect what your right hand has planted.

— Psalm 80:15–16

A teenager named Billy was having a hard time growing up. He was always in trouble; he got involved with a bad crowd, skipped school and began to use drugs. He was rude to his parents and he argued with his parents continuously. After one bitter argument with his father, he stormed out of the house threatening never to return.

His father was heartbroken. Although his son was rebellious he loved him more than life itself. He went looking for him but could not find him. After months of searching he decided to but an advertisement in the local newspaper. The ad read “Billy come home. I love you. Meet me at noon at the train station.”

The next morning he went to the station. There to his surprise he found several young men named Billy. They were each hoping that the ad was for them: that it was their father inviting them to come home!

Whatever our names are, and whatever our mistakes, God is inviting us to come home! “Jesus”, “Light of the World”, “Emmanuel”, “The Risen One”, “Prince of Peace”, call Him what you will, we know that God became flesh and dwells with us.

God’s son, “The Good Shepherd”, is holding out his hand to us. He is inviting us to take hold of his hand, to hold it tight and never let it go. On Christmas night God stepped into our world in person. He proclaims He is heartbroken without us; he wants us to come home.

This Christmas we say with all our hearts, “Thank you Lord for not giving up on us. Thank you Lord for giving us Jesus”. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given….”

Have you ever thought about becoming a Catholic priest? You are invited to a discernment retreat on Friday, January 26 at 4 pm through Sunday, January 28 at St. Patrick’s Seminary to better understand if a vocation to the ministry of God’s priesthood is for you!

Single men, 21 years of age or older, are invited to explore the possibility of a priestly vocation.

The weekend is designed to provide the tools needed to help you determine if God might be calling you to a vocation in the priesthood. Discernment Retreat will include prayer, discussion and presentations about the priesthood, group interaction and following the daily routine of a seminarian. For further information contact Rev. Thomas Day, Director of Vocations of the SF Archdiocese at 415-614-5684.
