Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
Third Sunday of Advent
December 17, 2006

The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear.

— Zephaniah 3:15b

We are getting closer to Christmas day. This Sunday we light the pink candle on our Advent wreath. It is traditionally known as Gaudete Sunday. (“Gaudete” meaning “Rejoice” in Latin). It sets the tone of joyful expectation for the Lord’s birth and Second Coming. For many of us there is joy in our hearts as we wait expectantly to celebrate this foundational event of our Christian lives: the incarnation. For others there is heightened anxiety as the countdown begins to complete shopping lists, to sort out the number of cards to be mailed, and to consider the presents to be bought and wrapped.

This is the season of gift giving and it confronts us with the greatest challenge of all: to look past the goodies that the internet and shopping centers put in front of us. We are called to see beyond the tinsel and lights and see the true Light that is coming into our world.

In the Gospel of this Sunday the crowds asked John the Baptist, “What must we do?” his preaching has created a sense of urgency and expectation and the people want to know what they should do. In essence John says, “Whoever you are, and whatever it is that you do, do it with all your heart. If you are a soldier, protect people. If you are a leader, take care of people and not just your own self-interests. If you have more than you need, share.”

Each of us plays a variety of roles: citizen, worker, professional, laity, clergy, religious, mother, father, sister and so on. Our challenge is to be “the good news” and to enable others to share the good news of a God who is near and cares for each and very person.

The T.E.R.E.S.A. Committee of the St. Dunstan’s Women’s Club will be meeting on Monday, December 18 at 7 pm in the St. Dunstan School Library. All ladies of the parish are most welcome to attend.
Cars Needed! Did you know that the St. Vincent de Paul Society gives away running cars to people in desperate need?

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul of San Mateo County needs your running vehicle! Call (650) 598-9148 to donate. Visit the vehicle lot and say hello to our friendly staff at 1805 El Camino Real in San Carlos. Help us help others!
