Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
First Sunday of Advent
December 3, 2006

I will raise up for David a just shoot; he shall do what is right and just in the land.

— Jeremiah 33:15

Once again we are in the season of Advent. Today’s reading from the Gospel of Luke may seem unexpected, as it is a story of the end of the world. It is however a story of anticipation. Advent is about our expectation of Jesus’ return. We know he came once at Bethlehem un-noticed by the world, except for Mary and a faithful few who were waiting for the Messiah to come among them. We are to live in joyful anticipation of Jesus’ Second Coming when we will live forever in His Kingdom. The images in the Gospel may be frightening but we are not to lose heart; Jesus our best friend is coming. We are called to be Christian; called by Him. He will return as He promised.

He is warning us, “Be vigilant.” “Your lives are too precious to waste. There are people to be loved and cared for, people who need the gifts God has entrusted to you. There are sicknesses to be healed, burdens to be lifted, and pains to be taken away. There are people that need to be listened to, and loved into wholeness.”

Advent provides us an opportunity to look around at what needs to be put right, to see how we have failed and to assess the ways in which we can do better. What ever our past, God is only too willing to look lovingly upon us. We will have a Penance Service here in St Dunstan on December 19th at 7:00 pm. I encourage everybody to make a special effort to avail of this occasion to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. It is an opportunity for all of us to prepare for Christmas and to advance on our spiritual journey by walking in the light of the Lord.
