Our gospel is taken from Saint John. It is
part of Johns account of the passion
of Jesus. It is this gospel that is always
proclaimed on Good Friday. All the way
through the passion, Jesus is in charge.
Jesus stands on trial before Pilate
accused of being a King. His friends have
deserted him; he is alone. There is nobody
to defend his cause. Although he has put
his trust in Peter and his friends, they
abandon him. The innocent one has charges
brought against him. Powerful people stand
in opposition to him. He is facing the
wrath and fury of the religious and
political authorities. For too long Jesus
has been the bane of their life. His
actions and words have been threatening
their very existence. With death staring
him in the face Jesus admits to being a
king, but not in a recognizable worldly
manner of kingship. As Jesus stands before
Pilate, he wears the symbols of kingship,
the crown of thorns and a purple cloak.
John does not dwell on the gory details of
his passion and death. He sees Jesus on
the throne he has chosen the Cross.
The words placed above Jesus emphasized
his true identity Jesus of
Nazareth, the King of the Jews. For
John the evangelist, there is no escaping
the fact that Jesus is truly King reigning
from the Cross. As he stood before Pilate
he was not very popular. The crowds,
spurred on by the fear and excitement,
wanted his blood. Barabbas was more
popular than Jesus and by public approval
escaped crucifixion. But Jesus was not
going to change and bend to the wishes of
Pilate or anyone else. He did not come to
be popular but to testify to the truth.
