Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 19, 2006

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

— Mark 13:31

As we come toward the end of the Liturgical Year, the readings for the 33rd Sunday of the year begin to focus our minds on the “end times”. The scripture readings speak of distress and tribulation; of stars falling from the sky; of the Son of Man coming in clouds. As Christians we are not meant to live in fear and dread of the end. Christ has claimed us for himself in baptism and he is our protector and savior. He will be on our side at the very end. As we pray in the third Eucharistic prayer, “..and ready to greet him when he comes again, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.”

Thanksgiving Day comes during this period of the Liturgical Year. On this day we recognize God the giver of all things and express our thanks. On this occasion we can follow the advice that we should count our blessings. This is the time of year for us to reflect on our lives and all the graces and blessings we have received during the past year.

There’s an old story about a traveler who came upon a barn where the devil had stored seeds. He planned to sow these seeds in the hearts of people. There were lots of bags and they were marked “Hatred”, “Fear”, “Doubt”, “Despair”, “Unforgiving”, “Pride”, “Greed” and so on.

The devil appeared and struck up a conversation with the traveler. He gleefully told the traveler how easily the seeds he sowed sprouted in the hearts of men and women.

“Are there any hearts in which these seeds will not sprout?” the traveler asked.

A melancholy look appeared on the devil’s face. “These seeds will not sprout in the heart of a thankful and joyful person”, he said.
