Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 12, 2006

The LORD keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry.

— Psalm 146:7

In our gospel this weekend, I wonder did Jesus talk to the widow after this episode? Did she even hear his comments on her generosity? Was she even interested in what others though of her bigheartedness?

A wealthy man attended a missionary service. The preacher spoke about poverty, disease and malnutrition among the people he went to help. The wealthy man was so moved that he gave a penny towards the work of the preacher. On his way home he was caught in a fierce thunderstorm. He crawled into a hollow tree for protection. The storm lasted longer than he expected. The tree began to swell from all the moisture, and the man couldn’t extricate himself. Thinking he was going to be squeezed to death he began to reflect on his life. He thought of all the selfish and mean things he ever did. After a while he thought of the measly penny he had given to the missions. He felt so small he crawled right out.

In the story of the widow’s mite, Jesus tells us that what makes a gift valuable is not its size but the heart that gives it. In the eyes of the passers-by the widow’s offering is virtually worthless but in the sight of God it is most precious. What wins her the Lord’s favor and earns his commendation is the fact that she keeps nothing back for herself. Her small gift is her all. In a way she is making an offering of her total life to God.

The hidden value of the widow’s offering teaches us that material goods is not the most important factor in the world. We all have something more precious than money to offer God. What God is looking for is our lives.
