A holy hermit was on a hilltop praying.
As he looked down, he could see several
people in the distance, making their way
along a country road: an old soldier in a
tattered uniform, stumbling along on one
leg, there was a gaunt and pale woman
staggering under the weight of her
starving child, He saw a young man so
badly beaten by robbers that he could
barely move at all. They were all sick and
sore. They were a pathetic group of
people. Looking down upon this terrible
parade of life and misery, the holy man
cried out to God, O God! How can
you, who claim to be a loving father, see
such suffering and do nothing about
it?
There
was a long expectant silence. And then out
of the silence God responded in a whisper,
I have done something about it, my
son, I have made you.
The
Great Commandment which Jesus gives us in
this Sundays Gospel in not just a
rule that God thought up, and we have to
obey if we are to inherit heaven. This
commandment is not a hoop we have to jump
through to be in Gods good books.
Loving God and loving our neighbor with
all our hearts is, quite simply, the only
way of living that works. It is the only
way of living that makes each of us
family to one another. It is
what we were made for and nothing less
will do. This commandment reverberates as
we pray the Our Father. When
we call God our father we
freely admit that we are brothers and
sisters. We place ourselves in harmony
with Christ and all the children of God.
We admit we are family. That is all there
is and all there ever will be: God and his
people: our family.
