Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 29, 2006

The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad indeed.

— Psalm 126:3

The blind Bartimaeus in today’s gospel is an example of what our faith and longing for the Lord ought to be like. He is a blind beggar on the lower end of the social ladder. He is dependent of others and their generosity for his daily food. He has firm confidence in the person of Jesus and is not put off by the abuse of the crowd. They look on him as a person of no importance and a nuisance. He is told to be quiet. Ignoring those around him, he persists with his plea. This man, although blind, knew what he wanted. He saw his one great opportunity and he was not going to be prevented by the crowd. His mind and heart was focused on this person passing by. He was passionate about meeting Jesus, son of David. He wanted to be able to see; this he wanted more than anything else in the world. Jesus did not disappoint him.

Once there was a man who dreamed of nothing but gold. He was obsessed with it. Morning, noon, and night he dreamt of it. One day he got up from his desk and ran to the marketplace. He ran through the crowd to the table where the man was selling gold coins. He swept them all into his little bag and ran away. A police officer was standing right next to him and nabbed him.

He took him to the police station and as he was locking him up he said to the man, “I can’t understand it. There you were, me right next to the merchant’s table and at least one hundred witnesses, and you steal something right in front of us all!”

The man replied, “I never saw any one. I only saw the gold.”
