The attitude, Whats in it for
me runs deep in all our hearts. When
the same question is asked of a Christian,
the answer given by Christ is the
cross. If we are looking for glory
or renown we are in the wrong place and
have not heard the message of the
Teacher.
Prior
to this weeks Gospel passage, Jesus
announced for the third time that he was
going to be killed. It must have been
scary for Jesus to know that his death was
imminent, that he had so much more to do
and so little time left. It would appear
that his disciples didnt hear what
he was telling them even though he kept
repeating how he would be betrayed and
killed. In reading todays Gospel we
might think the disciples got it wrong
once again and were only thinking about
themselves. There is an element of truth
in saying that James and John were selfish
and heartless in seeking for themselves
positions of authority. But I believe they
did hear Jesus and this episode is an
illustration of their amazing faith. I
dont believe they knew the full
implications of following Jesus, but they
were willing to stick by
him.
The
Teacher had just predicted for the third
time his approaching murder. He was a man
with a price on his head. He did not have
any possessions and depended on the
generosity of others. He associated with
the dregs of society and some members of
his own family thought he had lost his
mind. Anyone seeing him would say, with
all honesty, that he was a loser. Yet
James and John were willing to throw in
their lot with him. What was in it
for them? They believed that in the
end Jesus would be the big winner. Would
that you and I had such faith in Jesus.
