Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 15, 2006

The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword.

— Hebrews 4:12a

A young priest was called to a hospital where an old man lay dying. He leaned over his bed, and said clearly and loudly, “I am a priest. Is there anything I can do for you? With great effort the man turned to the priest and groaned, “Stop sending the envelopes.”

We live in an age when we are bombarded with values based on material security. We can judge our achievements on the size of our bank account, the extent of our possessions the area in which we live. Our spiritual values must run deeper than material standards.

The man in the Gospel had it all! He was rich, he prided himself on his goodness; he was a strict disciplinarian with regard to worship and keeping the commandments. The young man was brimming with life and could boast that he had done nothing wrong. Yet there seemed to be a lingering doubt in his mind that something was missing. He was courageous enough to ask to ask Jesus what he must do.

This is a question we all have to ask of ourselves. We may not be rich and famous, but Jesus invites each of us “Follow me.”

Is Jesus worth following? He is not asking us to be part-time followers. He is not asking us to admire his way of life, his values or his code of conduct. He is asking us to place our lives in his hands. But the Lord can’t take us by the hand if our hands are clasping and holding tightly to ‘stuff’. The young man was rich, powerful and had his hands full in maintaining his riches.

The old man dying in hospital will soon have a new address. Envelopes will not be needed and his hands will be empty. “Follow me?”
