Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
24th Sunday of Ordinary Time
September 17, 2006

The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced.

— Isaiah 50:7

One Sunday after church a mother asked her very young daughter what the pastor talked about in Sunday school. Her daughter answered, “Don’t be scared, you’ll get your quilts.” Needless to say the mother was perplexed by this response. Later that day she met the pastor and asked him what he had talked about. He told her the topic was, “Be not afraid, your Comforter is coming.”

At times we don’t get the message: it maybe because it is too difficult to comprehend, too hard to accept, or we are not listening. In the case of Peter he heard only part of what Jesus said and he could not believe it. No way was Jesus going to suffer, be rejected by his own people and killed. Peter heard pain and suffering and not the resurrection. Jesus was furious with Peter and told him, “Get behind me, Satan.” Harsh words to say to his friend! Yet Jesus was teaching Peter and not condemning him. Peter after all was the one who came up with the right answer when Jesus asked the question. He wanted to deepen his understanding and the implications of the answer.

He asked Peter to get behind him. It was as if Jesus was saying to Peter and us ‘look over my shoulder. What do you see? Look at the world from my point of view! Are you going to follow me Peter or do you want to lead? I go before you to prepare a way, a place for you. Peter, look at the world from where I’m coming from.’

In that encounter Jesus was asking Peter not just to see new landscapes. He was asking Peter to have his vision, to look at the world through his eyes. The vision might seem scary, but Jesus was telling him, ‘Be not afraid, your Comforter is coming.’

Stewardship Corner

Stewardship is about making choices, as individuals and in our parish community. Stewardship is about being faithful disciples, caring for and managing all that God has given us including our time and abilities. Stewardship is the grateful response to God’s grace and goodness. It requires a consideration of how choices affect us and others, of how we can be good caretakers of the created world, and of how we can best serve God as disciples of Christ. Please join us in learning more about St. Dunstan Stewardship during our Mission weekend, October 14-15, 2006, following each mass in the Parish Center.
