I remember living in community with a
confrere who was elderly. His sight was
failing but what really upset and annoyed
him was his loss of hearing. He was going
deaf and he refused to wear a hearing aid.
There was nothing we could do for him. As
the loss of hearing got worse he turned
more in on himself. As he found it
difficult to hear, he believed people we
talking about him and excluding him from
the conversation. He was losing touch with
the world he had known and had listened to
all his life. He began to regress to a
place inside himself where he
couldnt be touched.
The man
in the Gospel never knew how to speak
properly till he met Jesus. He was given
this gift after his encounter with
Jesus
It is
good to remember that the man in the
Gospel is very much all of us. We all need
the healing hand of God to make us hear
and speak the message of the Gospel. We
are born with the gift of hearing but
maybe with age we lose the ability to
listen or maybe we develop selective
hearing and hear only what we want to
hear. In many ways, our eyes and ears and
hearts are like drains that are all
stopped up. Nothing gets through and we
need to have someone unblock the system.
We need Christ to say Be
opened. Jesus is telling us that the
greatest tragedy of all is not to be born
deaf and dumb but to have ears and fail to
hear and to have tongues and fail to
speak. Without hearing the Gospel and
being challenged by the Word of God we can
turn in on ourselves. Let us ask the Lord
to give us attentive ears so as to hear
the Word and live it.

faith formation for children to grow in
love, knowledge, appreciation and desire
to become active members of the Catholic
Church. We are looking for volunteers to
assist in our program with teaching and
classroom support. It is our hope that you
will give consideration to the idea of
becoming one of our volunteers and share
