An American bishop, invited to preach down
South to a colored church, was asked by a
venerable churchwarden; Have you
ever preached in the South before,
sir? No, replied the
bishop. I will give you one piece of
advice. added the churchwarden.
Dont lay out too much on them
old Ten Commandments, for this is a most
respectable
congregation.
I
wonder what he would have said if Jesus
came to preach.
In the
Gospel this Sunday, Jesus is very harsh
when speaking to the scribes and
Pharisees. He lambastes them for being
hypocrites. He clashes with them over true
worship. We can stand in judgment of them
and say Jesus was right and they were a
crowd of pious hypocrites. We can be smug
in our condemnation thinking Jesus is on
our side. And yet most of them were
sincere people. They devoted their lives
in bringing people to God. They were no
worse than anyone of us gathered to
celebrate the Eucharist. We admit we are
sinners. We acknowledge our sinfulness at
the beginning of every Eucharist. Is our
admitting of being sinners and sinfulness
mere lip service, a ritual without
meaning?
The big
temptation is to see only the Pharisees in
the Gospel and not see ourselves; to hide
behind self-righteousness and not see
Jesus speaking to us. As Jesus said in
another place, We see the speck in
our brothers eye and we are not
aware of the plank in our own.
We
fulfill our Sunday obligation and go to
mass; and then what? We tuck our faith
away carefully till needed again the next
week? Fulfilling a church commandment does
not of itself make us good. Wearing a
religious medal or going on a pilgrimage
does not necessarily make us good
Catholics. Displays of faith are not hung
about our necks but are actions springing
from a faith-filled heart.

We Need Your AssistanceThe St.
Dunstan School of Religious Education is
an important part of the St. Dunstan
Parish community. We are dedicated in
providing our students with a desire to
share in the adventure of faith, learning,
liturgy and life. Our programs provide
faith formation for children to grow in
love, knowledge, appreciation and desire
to become active members of the Catholic
Church. We are looking for volunteers to
assist in our program with teaching and
classroom support. It is our hope that you
will give consideration to the idea of
becoming one of our volunteers and share
with us your time, talent and your
prayers. Contact the CCD Office at (650)
