When I was a missionary in West Africa I
used to write for money to various
European funding agencies. I had to be
careful how I wrote up the project. Some
organizations would only give support
towards transport; others for schools,
still others for agriculture. In one case
I wrote up a project for staff
accommodation for teachers. Everything I
stated in the project application was true
except for the identity of the teachers;
they were religious sisters. There were no
organizations willing to give money to
build a convent for sisters. I could get
money to develop rice farming, a village
water supply, for all kinds of
humanitarian needs, but when it came to
church work and spreading the
gospel, the money dried up. I could get
funds for a piggery but none to roof a
church. I got money for farm equipment but
nothing to support a catechist in her work
of evangelization.
I can
identify very much with Archbishop
Niederauers appeal for specific help
for the Catholic Church so badly damaged
by the destructive forces of hurricane
Katrina.
The
Archbishop has asked for your support for
the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the
Diocese of Biloxi this weekend. These are
the two Catholic dioceses worst affected
by the hurricane. St Dunstan gave
generously to the disaster relief fund
when we made a special collection last
year; we contributed over $10,000.00. This
money went primarily to the humanitarian
needs of the victims of the awful
disaster. We all saw horrific pictures of
people suffering and our hearts went out
to them. This weekend we are asked to be
as generous in meeting the Churchs
recovery and rebuilding needs in these
dioceses. This collection is our support
to other parishes in need of help in their
recovery from the destruction of hurricane
Katrina.
The St.
Dunstan Friendship
Club
will hold its monthly meeting on Friday,
September 1 at the Millbrae Community
Center at 10:30 am. We will have our
annual luncheon barbeque. For tickets call
Rena @ 697-4917. Price is $8. On Friday,
October 6 we will have a KFC lunch and
bingo. Price will be $8.50. Call Rena for
further information. Non members are
invited to attend.
Members,
please remember to bring canned goods for
the needy to be distributed by the St.
Vincent de Paul Society.
