Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 20, 2006

Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
you do not have life within you.

— John 6:53

When I was in Sierra Leone West Africa, as a young priest, it happened that I was on my own in the mission station for a few months. As there was no other person with me I tended to skip dinner. I would just make a sandwich for myself. I never felt like sitting at table on my own to have an evening meal.

Food is not the only important ingredient of a meal; I also feel that the company of others is an essential element. We are refreshed in body with food, but the company of others refreshes the soul. What really unites people is the chat, and the fun, and the time, while eating; it refreshes the heart and creates friendships. It was no different with Jesus. He wanted so much to share his last meal with his friends. He brought them together for the last time the night before he died. His love, friendship overflowed into them. He gave himself to them; this is my body, this is my blood.

Can we afford not to come to church? The company is present, the community gathers, the food is ready, Christ invites us to the table. Are we hungry? Do we know that without this food we will not survive?

There are so many distractions in our lives today. Time for the Lord can take second place. Games or sports, or other activities can eat up our time so we have little or no time for the Lord. We are invited to the table of the Lord and we can respond to the invitation. We can prepare ourselves for the banquet or decline the invitation. But written large on the invitation is; “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.”

The St. Dunstan Friendship Club will hold its monthly meeting on Friday, September 1 at the Millbrae Community Center at 10:30 am. We will have our annual luncheon barbeque. We are looking for volunteers to assist in our program with teaching and classroom support. It is our hope that you will give consideration to the idea of becoming one of our volunteers and share with us your time, talent and your prayers.
