Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
The Transfiguration of the Lord
August 6, 2006

The heavens proclaim his justice; all peoples see his glory.

— Psalm 97:6

Jesus was always a man of prayer and his disciples knew this about him. Off he goes again up a mountain to pray and he invites his three closest friends to come along. Not being men given to long periods of prayer they probably tag along to keep Jesus company. They have been with him some time now and know his routine. Yet, they really haven’t seen him or know him. Jesus is transformed before their very eyes.

In prayer the Transfiguration occurs and the disciples experience a radiant glimpse of God’s presence. His clothes become dazzling white. The disciples, shielding their eyes see Jesus transformed and the voice of God the Father in heaven declare; “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him”.

They must have been totally flabbergasted, although, we are told, they were not rendered speechless. Peter’s initial response to the Transfiguration was to capture the moment and build three tents. He wanted to prolong the moment. They would never see Jesus in the same way again.

In our own lives we don’t normally have these miraculous revelations of the risen Lord. Personally I’m skeptical of people who hear voices from heaven. But the Lord does come to us. Often God’s love, God’s healing, and God’s guidance touch our lives through the ordinary, the subtle, and the quiet.

Consider our gathering as a community around the table of the Lord. We admit we are not exceptionally good Christians, in fact we admit we are sinners. We are ordinary people who live regular lives and we come to this amazing event.

Peter, James and John, met God in Jesus through the mysterious encounter of the Transfiguration. As we gather to celebrate the Eucharist we also have a miraculous encounter. Christ comes to us. Do we recognize him in the breaking of bread?

The members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society wish to thank all of you who contributed to last weekend’s Fifth Sunday Collection. Your generosity will help us to help those in need in our parish area.

Thank you!

WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT?

Why do Catholics bless themselves before and after entering the church?

Old Testament Jews washed with water before entering the Temple precincts. Building on a ritual familiar to the Jews, John the Baptist used water to represent repentance of sin and purification.

So when we cross ourselves with holy water entering and leaving the church, we recall that history. But we also refer to our Baptism when a priest used water to symbolize the washing away of our sins and to protect us from evil.
