Saint Dunstan Catholic Church
16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 23, 2006

Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD,
when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David.

— Jeremiah 23:5a

One of the most extraordinary phenomena I’ve observed in recent years is the apparent ability of young people to study some subject and listen to music at the same time. It seems that earsplitting music doesn’t hinder their concentration. At least that is what they tell me. I find it extraordinary because I cannot drive an automobile in heavy traffic and have the radio turned, and at the same time pay full attention to what is happening around me. I need all the quiet I can get so as to concentrate on the flow of traffic. If I want to give my full attention to anything, then I need no distractions; I need quiet.

To be able to sit quietly without distraction of sound or sight, to go to a place within ourselves that does not seek external stimulation is a formidable task. We need to meet ourselves so as to know ourselves. It takes courage to discard external diversions and distractions. However if we don’t have quiet silent time to look at ourselves, how will we find time for Christ? Silence can be frightening.

The gospel speaks of the importance of finding a quite place in our lives where we can be alone with God in prayer. Like Jesus we need to get away from the constant cacophony of sounds that we are exposed to each waking moment of our day. We need to listen to the life-giving Word of God to refresh and heal us. If we don’t make space for God in our lives, we are missing a piece (peace) of the fullness of life. Alone in his presence we might ask ourselves where we are going and what we are trying to achieve. In the quietness of His presence we might be surprised at the answer.

A note of thanks from Father Ken Mazur, PIME Missionaries

Dear Parishioners of St. Dunstan,

Thank you for your generous and warm welcome and response to my recent mission appeal.

May the Lord send his abundant blessings upon you and your loved ones for your generosity to the poorest of God’s children.

Sincerely, Fr. Ken Mazur

Fr. Francis Mulloy, C.S.Sp

Fr. Frank Mulloy, C.S.Sp took up duty as Associate Pastor in St. Dunstan’s on January 1, 1992. He is now about to retire and will return to Ireland on Monday, July 31.

He takes this opportunity to thank the parishioners and all staff members for their kindness and courtesy with which they consistently treated him over the years. He looks back fondly on all the major family events in which he shared Baptisms, First Holy Communions, weddings, and of course, funerals. All these are integral parts of the life of the parish.

It is with a certain sadness that he leaves St. Dunstan; but with trust in the providence of God who has something arranged for.

He will remember you in his prayers, and the prays that the blessing of God be on the parish and that the Mother of Perpetual Help keep all its members under her protection.
