There is something very moving about this
gospel passage of Jesus sending out twelve
ordinary men. They are unsophisticated,
had lived a simple life and are now asked
to participate in bringing the message of
Gods word to others. They had
followed Jesus and listened to his
teaching, which they themselves did not
fully understand. They were told not to
worry about their physical needs and not
to be upset if their message was not
welcome at every door. The gospel tells us
they were successful. Their success was in
no small measure because Jesus was with
them.
I was
at a function recently and the man beside
me, who was not a Catholic, was bemoaning
the fact that many people do not have the
Lord in their lives. He wanted to know how
to attract people to Christ. This is a
profound question and one that cannot be
answered over a meal in a restaurant. My
first thought was that of the early
church. There were no major missionary
societies; no Jesuits, Dominicans,
Franciscans, Spiritans in existence. And
yet the church spread and grew.
The
sending out of the twelve apostles was but
the beginning of the churchs mission
to the world. Down the centuries, ordinary
people have been called and responded to
share the Good News of Jesus Christ. If
the Word of God is to reach all people
then everyone who hears it must make it
known. The Good News is not to be guarded
jealously, but to be handed on to
others.
The
spreading of the Good News is too
important to be left in the hands of a few
professionals. Christ never
intended that a select few would carry is
message to others. Baptism makes us all
responsible for the spread of the Gospel.

ARCHBISHOPS
ANNUAL APPEAL UPDATE
St.
Dunstans participation in the
Archbishops Annual Appeal has
reached $63,500. Our assessment this year
is $75,200. Thank you to all of you who
have turned in your pledges and ask the
rest of you to join in this important
work. The campaign is going well, but it
is not yet completed. This appeal is
important to many ministries and services
that serve thousands of people. This is
work that cannot be done by any single
parish, but together as an archdiocese we
can make amazing things happen. As always,
your continued support and generosity is
very much appreciated.

Now in its 75th year in San Mateo County,
the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has
over 1,000 dedicated volunteers who
provide emergency assistance in every area
of the county. For FY 2005 the Society's
San Mateo District Council announced that
46,210 unduplicated individuals were
helped and of those, 21,500 were children.
11,330 home visits were made to clients
regarless of race, creed or disability or
any other criteria other than need.
Volunteers give food, prevent evictions
with rent assistance, offer clothing and
furniture and other basic neccessities.
Last year direct assistance totaled
$2,796,560. SVdP also has three homeless
help centers where 3,020 people were given
aid. 3,750 visits were made to the
incarcerated and 1,090 visits were made to
the sick. Rehabilitative employment is
offered at 4 stores in Daly City, South
San Francisco, San Mateo and Redwood City.
SVdP also staffs a vehicle lot in San
Carlos for donated cars. Administration
and fundraising expenses were 7%.
Ninety-three cents of every dollar donated
goes directly to help the poor. Contact
Margaret Jung, SVdP Development Director
at (650) 373-0622 to receive a copy of the
annual report and learn more about the
works of SVdP in San Mateo County. Please
