When we read the gospel this weekend we
may be tempted to wonder at the blindness
of the people of Jesus own town. We
may even condemn them for not recognizing
the presence of God in their midst. The
truth was staring them in the face but it
was too familiar for them to recognize. As
Jesus was a carpenter he would have been
well know in the community. In all
likelihood he worked and done various
carpentry jobs for a number of people in
the town. He was one of them. They were
not aware of any greatness in themselves
so how could they see greatness to Jesus?
They knew him too well to be able to
recognize God in their
midst.
Is God
to be found in the exotic, in far off
places, in some obscure language or
ritual? We easily forget the obvious, that
God moves in mysterious ways, and is most
lightly present in our nearest and
dearest, and in our neighbor. God is in
the ordinary bits and pieces of everyday
life. He doesnt take a day off or
move to another location. He is not apart
from the world nor controlled by people or
ritual. He is so present in and to his
creation that we too can miss the obvious.
The Word became flesh and dwelt
among us
We can
become like the people of Jesus own
town. We can become a people who, blinded
by envy and prejudice, fail to see the
greatness in others. We believe we know
them too well for God to be incarnated in
that person. At times the familiar can
blind us to the
extraordinary.
When
you finish reading this, look at the first
person you see and ask yourself: Do
I take for granted the presence of Christ,
as witnessed in the goodness of that
person?
TAKE TIME
OUT FOR A RETREAT
The
SUMMER HOME RETREAT is designed for men
and women who are seeking a deeper
relationship with God and cannot take time
off for an extended retreat. This retreat
is an opportunity for those who cannot
ordinarily get away to pray and reflect.
It is a time to have the support of a
personal spiritual director. Call Sharon
Almeida at 340-7495 for info.

WHY DO
CATHOLICS DO THAT?
Why do
we sometimes use incense in the
Mass?
Todays
incense is made from Frankincense, which
is derived from the sap of desert trees.
It has been prized in the Middle East for
centuries, and became associated with
Jesus since the Magi offered it as a
gift.
The
sweet smell of incense is intended to
please God and its smoke is like our
prayers rising to heaven.
Incense
can be used during the Mass to show
reverence for the altar, the Gospels, the
bread and wine, the assembly, and the body
of the deceased during a funeral.

ARCHBISHOPS
ANNUAL APPEAL UPDATE
St.
Dunstans participation in the
Archbishops Annual Appeal has
reached $62,600. Our assessment this year
is $75,200. Thank you to all of you who
have turned in your pledges and ask the
rest of you to join in this important
work. The campaign is going well, but it
is not yet completed. This appeal is
important to many ministries and services
that serve thousands of people. This is
work that cannot be done by any single
parish, but together as an archdiocese we
can make amazing things happen. As always,
your continued support and generosity is
very much appreciated.
Stewardship
Corner
As good
disciples, we recognize that all creation
and everything we possess has been
entrusted to us by our loving God. These
gifts include our faith, our time, our
talents and abilities, and our material
resources. Stewardship is living out a
commitment to be Christ centered, rather
than self centered and involves a
conversion of the heart. Stewardship is a
lifelong journey with each person at a
different place on the path.
