This weekend we have the beautiful story
of the healing power of Jesus. We have a
synagogue official, whose little girl is
at the point of death and he is in
desperate need of help. We also have the
pushy woman who needs to be cured and who
believes that touching the clothes of
Jesus will do it. Both the girl and the
woman are healed.
The
heart of Jesus could never resist a hand
outstretched in need or an appeal for help
made in faith. Healing was at the center
of his public ministry. He went around the
whole of Galilee curing whatever illness
or infirmity was among the poor. The
healing acts of Jesus were themselves a
message that he had come to set us
free.
The
mission of the church in every age is to
continue the healing work which Jesus
began through his miracles. We are all
called in our own way to bring life and
health to the circumstance in which we
find ourselves. We are all called as
Christians to perform the corporal works
of mercy: Feed the hungry, give drink to
the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the
imprisoned, shelter the homeless, visit
the sick and bury the dead.
There
is a joke told about the Irishman who was
at the battle of Trafalgar with Admiral
Lord Nelson. Before the battle began,
Nelson came on deck and said, Is Pat
Murphy on board? Pat piped up,
Here I am me Lord. With
confidence, now that Pat was beside him,
Lord Nelson said, Let the battle
proceed.
Its
a poor joke but maybe it carries some
truth. Without the Pat Murphys and the
Mary Smiths and all the others who are
always there doing their duty, there are
no victories, there are no great
commanders.
The
healing today, in many instances, is when
the ordinary Christian is
Christian.
TAKE TIME OUT FOR A RETREAT
The
SUMMER HOME RETREAT is designed for men
and women who are seeking a deeper
relationship with God and cannot take time
off for an extended retreat. This retreat
is an opportunity for those who cannot
ordinarily get away to pray and reflect.
It is a time to have the support of a
personal spiritual director. Call Sharon
Almeida at 340-7495 for info.
To
register call 340-7454 or go to

ARCHBISHOPS ANNUAL APPEAL
UPDATE
St.
Dunstans participation in the
Archbishops Annual Appeal has
reached $51,800. Our assessment this year
is $75,200. Thank you to all of you who
have turned in your pledges and ask the
rest of you to join in this important
work. The campaign is going well, but it
is not yet completed. This appeal is
important to many ministries and services
that serve thousands of people. This is
work that cannot be done by any single
parish, but together as an archdiocese we
can make amazing things happen. As always,
your continued support and generosity is
very much
appreciated.
Stewardship
Corner
As good
disciples, we recognize that all creation
and everything we possess has been
entrusted to us by our loving God. These
gifts include our faith, our time, our
talents and abilities, and our material
resources. Stewardship is living out a
commitment to be Christ centered, rather
than self centered and involves a
conversion of the heart. Stewardship is a
lifelong journey with each person at a
different place on the
path.
